Sir John Boyd was the British ambassador to Japan, between 1992 and 1996. From 1996 to 2006 he was the Master of Churchill College, Cambridge, the body which commissioned this, Tom's last official portrait. He was appointed Chairman of the Trustees of the British Museum in 2002
