Certain problems in painting, especially the juxtaposition of very dark colours in close harmony which had made Una Selva Oscura (ie Dante's Dark Wood) so difficult, resolve themselves more effectively in tapestry. Its dense surface soaks up the light and gives it back with resonance. The tapestry version of this subject, which I imagined (but could not afford to realise) on a huge scale, seems, even over a limited area, to be the most successful.
